Happy Birthday to Kate!!

Dear Katherine,

You are growing so quickly! You are such a talkitive, giggly little thing. You most often can be found in the kitchen with mommy or rocking your baby to sleep. You also love to climb and play outside. You are growing up to be such a super young lady. Thank you for bringing so much joy into our home. I thank God that He choose me to be your mommy!! Follow Him Baby Kate and let Him direct your life. You will do amazing things for Him. I love you!!!

Love Mommy

Something old, something new.

while Jeremiah crawling might be "old" news now.......

He also has some "new" news too.....

He now has 4 teeth! With 2 more almost poking through it will soon be 6!

And yes, as you could probably tell I have all things wedding on the brain! I've been shower planning, dress shopping envelope addressing, and reception menu planning in addition to schooling, homemaking, mothering, and being a helpmeet to my wonderful husband. So, while my posting has slowed just remember my life hasn't and that is why I'm posting less!!

Maternity

I had my first maternity photo shoot this weekend. Would you like to see the results? Just click HERE to be taken to the Facebook album. I hope you leave me some feedback of ways to improve or your thoughts. Thank you!

I also wanted my dear readers to know that my youngest sister has recently gotten engaged and is getting married on Novemeber 5th!!! Yes, that is six short weeks away and since she is living in my basement and I am her oldest sister this has filled my calander to over-flowing!! Add to that the start of school and I must ask you to bear with me if posting slows a little. I am not giving up blogging and I hope you will continue to visit Our Heart and Home during this busy time in my life.

It's Party Time

I've had some questions lately about parties in our house. I've gotten some comments regarding frugal party throwing. So, I thought I would write a post about some of my party throwing techniques. We host an open house in our home for our church once a month, and try to host company at least a time or two a month and as you know hosting company can get expensive. So here are some of my tips to offer hospitality often but not break the bank.

  • Cook Ahead - I love freezer cooking!! And I have applied it to my hosting also. I keep a "stash" of quick breads and cookies in the deep freeze for last minute invites, drop by guests and those days where I run out of time when company is coming and I need a dessert. This keeps me from having to run out at the last minute and buy a $7 bakery dessert.
  • Plan Wisely - And I don't mean just when the opportunity to host comes up. I have a list of easy, inexpensive appetizers to choose from each time I host. Most of these appetizers can be done ahead of time, and go far, and don't cost a bunch. Here are some ideas.
    • Corn chips and salsa (I buy these at Sam's in the industrial size cans and they are even cheaper)
    • Pigs in a blanket (Sometimes I make the buscuit dough and other times I buy the cheap buscuits from Aldi or Save A Lot to save time)
    • Cinnamon Crisps - I cut flour tortillas into wedges, fry in a little bit of oil and toss in cinnamon sugar
    • Sloppy Joes - the meat can be made even days ahead of time and frozen
    • Taco bar - have each guest bring a topping
  • Be willing to work - Don't just buy soda because it's easy, make the time to make tea, lemonade, etc. They are much cheaper and don't require all that much effort. Also, unless we are having a large group of people over I don't use throw away dishes. I just make sure the dish washer is empty before the party starts and use my everyday stuff. Doesn't take that much time, but sure does save a dime!!!
  • Start late - start the party a half hour later and only offer desserts and snacks instead of the whole meal. Most of the time people won't even miss the food because they are still getting to fellowship with friends.
So, there are some of my ideas for throwing frugal parties. If you come to my house, don't expect fancy decorations or elaborate meals, but I pray that you will find a welcoming spirit, good fellowship that pleases the Lord, and food that you can enjoy.

I hope these ideas help. If you have any specific questions I would love for you to ask in a comment and I will follow up with you or in another post. Now go and offer Godly hospitality to those around you!!

Vacation

This week is our yearly vacation. So we will be camping, fishing, sight seeing, and spending oodles and oodles of time as a family. But this year we are doing it closer to home. We are spending most of the week out on my parent’s farm. It is only about a half hour away but our far enough that there are no neighbors to be seen, no internet to pull, no emails to answer, and very little cell phone service to interrupt. So it will be a laid back week and to make the whole thing even better it it supposed to cool off around here!!! We have been in the 100’s still lately but this coming week it’s highs in the 70’s and lows in the 50’s!!!
And that, in my book, is great camping and bonfire weather!!
So, I’ve set a few posts to auto-publish and I’ll be “connected” when we do come back into town to water the garden, check the mail, and probably pick up something we forgot. Have a great week!! And enjoy the weather!! I hope it is beautiful wherever you are!!

Daily Life

I’ve been thinking a lot about the day in and day out dealings of a large family. They really are much different than your “average” size family. For instance, many mothers have never….

  • Used an entire loaf of bread in one meal for just their family
  • Poured milk in everyone’s glass and over their cereal only to look down and see the brand new gallon of milk almost empty.
  • Done 7 loads of laundry in one day and still not finished it all.
  • Looked online for plans to build bunk beds three beds high.
  • Bought ketchup in a one gallon container.
  • Bought 25 lbs of oatmeal.
  • Looked at the number of snacks contained in a package and thought, that’s crazy it would only go around once and it’s $2!!
  • Used an entire 2 liter of soda in one meal.
And yet, this is my life. Every day, day in and day out I find myself laughing about some crazy thing my family does or requires. I know this life isn’t for everyone and that doesn’t make you right or my right or anyone wrong. It just makes us different and that is fine. And no matter what your family size or structure, I sure do hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine!! Have a blessed day serving the family God has blessed you with.

Climb.

Climb. Climb. Up sunshine mountain.

Or, in Samantha's case.....

The door frame!

She will climb up here and just hang there and chat with me while I am cooking dinner. It startles people at first, but we don't even blink an eye at it anymore. We all just walk under her and keep on going.

What a crazy girl!!!
